Century Oak

century-oak

Towering above the landscape,
each massive branch could be
a handsome tree,
should it surrender
its horizontal existence
and plant itself upright
on the ground.
The century oak
has never swayed,
surviving wind and storm,
drought and downpour,
adding ring upon ring
to its trunk each year.
Every spring
bursting out with
bright green leaves,
dropping them,
turned brown, in fall.
It has shared its shade
with many a boy,
who has since
grown old and died.
Through all it has stood
content and calm,
as though it would
go on forever,
until the new owners
decided they would
rather plant
a garage
there in that spot.

  1. Such a beautiful sad poem! My father tore down a fantastic weeping will ow in our yard when I was a kid. he said it was a threat to the foundation of the house. I still get teary eyed over it.
… I have invited you to participate in “Love In Ten Sentences,” but there’s no pressure to do so. If you would like to, you can find the details here… https://throughthelensofmylife.wordpress.com/2015/03/02/love-in-ten-sentences-and-home/

    • Thank you Terry. I’ll try and find some time to submit something to the ‘Love in Ten Sentences’. I signed up for the Photography 101 course, but I don’t think I’m going to have the time to devote to it over the next three weeks. Best of luck with it, I will check in to see what other course participants are submitting.

      • You’re welcome! I actually missed the sign-up for Photography 101, being so preoccupied trying to finish Writing 101: Poetry. I’m just going to follow along with the photo prompts as inspiration on an as-can-do basis. I participated in Photography 101 in the fall and it was a lot of fun. Oh well, they’ll repeat it soon!
