Awake

You look around
and notice, one day,
that something is gone.
It disappeared so slowly,
like water evaporates
from a puddle
after a storm.
No one saw it go,
there’s no trace left,
nor clue to where it
now can be found.
Yet in its absence
remains the hollow ring,
echoing in remote
corners of the earth.
So they come, still
believing,
only to learn
we are all awake here.
There’s no more
dreaming
in America.
