Bumps in the Road

Isn’t it peculiar
the way
we sail along
on the smooth
open highway,
warm wind
pulling a strand
of hair out the window,
gas tank full,
engine humming,
and radio playing loud?
Isn’t it peculiar
how seldom
we think about
the ease
with which
we make our way?
Until,
sometimes
without any
warning,
the smooth highway
turns into a
construction zone
with detours,
uneven
pavement,
and six lanes
choking down into
one.
And then we think,
man, this road
sucks,
and wasn’t that
smooth highway
nice,
and why didn’t we
know back then
just how
wonderful
it was,
to cruise along
without any
bumps
in the road.

  1. I used to write (try to write) poetry. I sucked. I mean, I loved where my mind went when I was writing it…I disappeared, and someone else took over. But what came out on the page was not what I imagined in my head while…goofing off in netherland. Many poems, I don’t like. This poem pulled me right in, I couldn’t stop reading. And I saw that strand of hair in the wind. I did want to hear if the loud music was, say, Taylor Swift or Carly Simon or Bob Seger. Down my smooth road, it would have been Bob Seger.

    • Thank you so much for the kind words. I know what you mean about goofing off in netherland, I enjoy this aspect of writing, and often times the results suck. Every now and then something comes out that I think maybe doesn’t. Hard to say what my loud music would be…could be JJ Cale, or Dan Hicks, Eric Clapton, Jim Hendrix, or Dr John…or Bob Segar…

  2. Hi DM Shephard,
I’ve just dropped by to thank you for stopping by my blog and liking my post on “Salted Roasted Pumpkin Seeds”. I’m sorry that I am posting this message on your post there just wasn’t another place that I was able to write. I’ve had a look around your blog and I just love your photos – in particular the main photo that you have as your header. I’m not sure where you took it or why you decided to use it for this blog but I think it is perfect for a blog about poems and photos :).
